Localization of relativistic particles and uncertainty relations    [PDF]

Daniel R. Terno
Localization of relativistic particles is still a controversial topic. We construct a positive operator-valued measure for position that is based on the energy density and give explicit expressions for the resulting probability distributions for scalar particles and photons. The probability density of photons's position equals to the modulus squared of the Newton-Wigner-like wave function, even if the Newton-Wigner position operator does not exist. We show that the effective 3x3 polarization density matrices are expressed in terms of this wave function, and derive a sharp uncertainty relation Delta x Delta p_x>hbar/2+...
