Scattering light through a two-sided optical cavity    [PDF]

This paper introduces a Hamiltonian for two-sided optical cavities of arbitrary length which can be used to model, for example, fiber connections in coherent cavity networks [Kyoseva et al., New J. Phys. 14, 023023 (2012)]. To justify this Hamiltonian, we apply it to a situation which can be analysed taking either a fully quantum optical or a fully classical approach and demand consistency of the predictions of both theories. The proposed cavity Hamiltonian allows us to assign different decay channels to photons traveling in different directions and guarantees that reflected and transmitted photons have the same frequency as the incoming light. For cavities with resonant and near-resonant laser driving, we find that the total cavity photon number evolves as predicted by the standard standing wave description of optical cavities.
